EXERCISE TRAINER

At 1st Classen Physical Therapy, the Exercise Trainer position is responsible for leading patient through their treat and flow plan for the day based on the therapist selections. Trainers are expected to observe patients during stretches, exercises, and other activities to verbally adjust body mechanics for proper form.  Good communication is expected in this position to keep all patients safe and progressing to their physical goals.

An experienced exercise trainer is preferred for this position to provides education to patients, patient's family members, and/or caregivers, and collaborates with other interprofessional team members, as needed, for problem resolution and/or achievement of identified patient specific goals. The exercise trainer position will use best practices and process improvement initiatives while following the PTOT TX state and APTA laws for physical therapy. We expect all staff to stay up to date on licensure and education guidelines to practice safely in TX.

Requirements:

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Contributes to teamwork, consistently offering assistance, and responding positively to requests for assistance. Collaborates to foster healthy relationships in the work environment. Offers guidance to interprofessional health care team, when appropriate, and applies feedback to improve patient outcomes.

  • Uses therapeutic communication, which includes active listening and teaching, to establish a relationship with patients, families and interprofessional health care team to follow Physical Therapist plan of care. Partners with members of the interprofessional care team by actively communicating and reporting pertinent patient care information and data in a comprehensive manner to Physical Therapist and Management when concerns arise.

  • Teaches and provides guidance to peer exercise trainers, and other staff. Uses peer-to-peer accountability towards improvement of department efficiency for employee engagement.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Inquire of patient states and update documentation for patient concerns, pain, and subjective information. Report to the therapist how the patient is feeling that day in order for the treating therapist to select correct procedure for that treatment.

  • Lead patients through their treat & flow plan laid out by the therapist each session.

  • Recognizes complications/limitations associated with certain procedures and proactively alert the treating therapist to the concern. If activities become easy for patients alert the therapist and request to increase the activity difficulty or change to new activity. Follow therapist directions.

  • Maintain a safe environment for patients and staff at all times. Alert therapist and management of any safety concerns immediately.

  • Proactively identifies opportunities for corrective action by verbally informing patients how to improve form, posture, and body mechanics during treatment.

  • Assist therapists in modalities that improve function.

  • and assists in process improvement by providing recommendations and contributes to meeting department and office targeted goals for quality and safety. Identifies areas of practice improvements with research-based evidence and assists in development of treatment protocols and best practice for certain population or practice area to achieve patient safety outcomes, supported by accurate documentation.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains accurate and complete documentation in a timely manner for therapist updated information during session.

  • Uses resources efficiently to maximize utilization of time and equipment.

  • Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively, minimizing incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks, assisting coworkers as needed.

GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Attend and participate during in-services and training for Exercise Training Department in order to understand changes in healthcare, the clinic, and company process to accurately complete the job daily.

  • Seeks opportunities to identify self-development needs and expand learning beyond baseline competencies with a focus on continual development as an Exercise Trainer, taking appropriate action.

  • Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION

  • Graduate of high or GED

​

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Understand of basic exercises for arms, core, and legs preferred.

​

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - REQUIRED

  • BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations

  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security

  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, therapists, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles

  • Strong assessment, organizational and problem-solving skills as evidenced by capacity to prioritize multiple tasks and role components

  • Demonstrates increasing expertise and executes experienced clinical skills in treatments provided and/or for a particular patient population

  • Exhibits strong interpersonal, teamwork and leadership skills with all levels of the healthcare team and assures delivery of excellent customer service to all patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers

  • Ability to function independently, capable of handling challenging/difficult therapy procedures and patient care situations

  • Demonstrates sound judgment in interactions with physical therapists, management, interprofessional care team and patients and their families

  • Possesses proficient computer knowledge; operates multiple computer systems and standard Rehabilitation equipment

  • Demonstrates professional and technical competence in the selection, evaluation, utilization of treatment plans for increasingly complex patient populations
